Singaporeans need to have more sex

Singapore fertility rate

If Singapore is to re-populate itself naturally, every woman needs to have 2.1 babies during her lifetime according to Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng. Not too tall an order you would think.

But in fact Singapore's people appear somewhat sexually disinclined.

Singapore's fertility rate has dropped to a new low in 2010 with the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) -- the average number of children that a woman will bear in her lifetime -- dipping to 1.16, down from the 2009 figure of 1.22.

Both figures released by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng at an Institute of Policy Studies forum yesterday are well below the TFR rate of 2.1 babies needed to replenish the population naturally.
